This joyous occasion holds great and cherished significance in Indian Hindu culture and is observed by millions of people around the world.  Diwali signifies the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.  It usually falls between October and November, depending on the lunar calendar, and lasts for five days.  During this time, homes are illuminated with beautiful lamps and candles, symbolizing the triumph of knowledge and righteousness.  The festival has various legends associated with it, but a common theme throughout is the celebration of Lord Rama’s return to his kingdom Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana.  It is believed that people lit lamps to guide Rama and his wife Sita back home, and this tradition continues to be observed during Diwali.

The festivities not only include the lighting of lamps but also involve cleaning and decorating homes, exchanging gifts, bursting fireworks, and enjoying traditional sweets and savory dishes.  Families come together to perform puja (prayers) and seek blessings from deities.  It is a time of joy, togetherness, and harmony.  Apart from its religious significance, Diwali holds a broader cultural importance.  It serves as a reminder to embrace positivity, let go of negativity, and foster peace and prosperity.  It is a time when people resolve conflicts, forgive and forget, and start afresh as they enter a new year.  In recent years, Diwali has gained recognition and appreciation beyond the Indian community.  Many cities around the world participate in Diwali celebrations, showcasing the vibrant colors, music, and dance of Indian culture.  This intercultural exchange promotes understanding and unity among diverse communities.

I’m neither Indian nor Hindu, but I love celebrating Diwali!  Let us embrace the essence of this festival and its teachings.  Let us illuminate our lives with kindness, compassion, and gratitude.  May we strive to eliminate the darkness of ignorance and prejudice and foster a world where everyone can thrive.  Wishing you all a joyous and blessed Diwali filled with love, light, and happiness.
